About Me

From humble beginnings in Lynchburg, Virginia, John Sydnor has built a distinguished community and economic development career, dedicating his life to service and marked by impactful leadership roles. With over 30 years in the nonprofit sector, he embodies a collaborative spirit that is an integral part of his character, making him a significant force for positive change in the communities he serves.

His expertise spans several areas, reflecting his passion for societal transformation. He holds a Master's in Urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Commonwealth University. His career includes leadership roles in community wealth building, environmental preservation, and stimulating sustainable economic development.

Among his many professional achievements, he has been recognized with the Virginia Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence and an award from the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He has served on the National Association of Park Foundations Board of Directors and the Virginia Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee, showcasing his dedication to community-level change.

With over three decades of experience in the nonprofit sector, he takes pride in contributing to transformative fundraising initiatives, actively participating in campaigns that have collectively raised nearly $75 million. Additionally, he led efforts to restore significant historical sites in Richmond and initiated TreeLab, rejuvenating the city's tree nursery program.

Outside his professional realm, he is an avid outdoor enthusiast with a deep love for history and technology. His childhood experiences in nature evolved into a passion for hiking, biking, running, and camping. His interests also extend to history, music, technology, and building computers with his son.

His sense of community is also evident in his charitable endeavors. He has been actively involved with Habitat for Humanity since his early career, reflecting his compassionate nature. His engagement in democratic politics since high school demonstrates his long-standing commitment to civic engagement, equality, and justice.
